Hiking Tips
Hiking is a great way to visit an area, connect with nature and friends. It has many physical and spiritual benefits.
In order for your outing to be pleasant and safe you must make some preparations ahead of time.
Before the hike get yourself a field guide of the area, it will inform you on what to expect in the area; water source location, different trails, animals, laws and regulation of the park and area.
Good manners and etiquette are to be applied everywhere and at all times. In order for your hike to be a positive experience you must remember to respect your environment, the people that are with you, the people you might meet along the way and the people who will come after you.
Go over this hiking tips list before any hike;
1. Appropriate shoes
2. Hat
3. Anti-perspiration and anti -rain clothes
4. A compass or GPS
5. Sunglasses
6. Sunscreen
7. Head lamp and flash light
8. Waterproof matches
9. Batteries
10. Cell phone
11. Food
12. Whistle and a bear bell
13. Thermal blanket
14. Water (at least 2L)
15. Toilet paper
16. Pocket knife
17. Utensils
18. Preferable to go on the hike with someone
For overnight hiking trails you will also need:
1. Tent
2. Sleeping bag
3. Foam mats
4. Bio degradable Soap
5. Extra food/water
6. Camp stove, alcohol or gas
7. Rope
8. Garbage bag and bear bag for your food to seal and hang between two trees and away from where you are sleeping
9. Water purifying tablets
10. Licenses for fishing and park permits (if applicable)
11. First aid kit
12. Aspirin
13. Snake bite kit
14. Back pack (lightweight )
15. Inform family or friends of your itinerary
The back pack should not weigh more than 20% of the hiker’s weight
